TOP 15 iced coffee (frappe) recipes

What is Frappe coffee?

This word is translated from French as “to hit, hit” and implies an original way of serving alcoholic drinks in a special “old-fashioned” glass, which is filled to the top with fine ice.

A free interpretation, popular in non-professional circles, means the word frappe is any drink based on crushed crushed ice instead of water. The barista’s answer to the question “What is frappe coffee?” will answer that it is a cold coffee drink covered with milky white foam, prepared by mixing espresso or doppio, milk and ice cubes in a shaker.

It is rarely possible to say with an accuracy of one year when the world saw a certain dish or drink. Coffee frappe is lucky in this regard: it is known for certain that it was first prepared in September 1957 as part of the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair.

Dimitrios Vakondios, a resident of Greece and part-time representative of the world famous brand Nestle, wanted to make himself a cup of instant coffee, but could not get hold of boiling water anywhere. Instead (probably as a joke), the man was offered ice. The resourceful Greek decided to try his luck: he poured milk into the coffee powder, covered it with ice and shook it in a shaker. The result exceeded all our wildest expectations; the resulting drink turned out to be a valuable find in the sweltering heat of the southern climate. Dimitrios' successful experiment soon found hundreds and thousands of followers all over the world.

Today, the delicate, memorable taste of frappe with a pleasant light bitterness and soft, abundant foam has successfully broken the stereotype that delicious coffee is exclusively hot.

Origin of the drink

The iced coffee cocktail in question is a relatively recent invention. For this reason, we know in detail not only the history of frappe, but also the date, place, and even the name of the creator.

The drink was first prepared by a Greek named Dimitrios Vakondios, who worked at one of the fair stands owned by Nestle. This happened in the summer of 1957 in hot Greek Thessaloniki.

Like many wonderful inventions, frappe was invented due to a coincidence. The enterprising young man's working day was long and the day was hot, so Dimitrios decided to cheer himself up with a portion of instant granulated coffee, which he loved very much. But, as luck would have it, there was no hot boiling water anywhere at the fair to brew the drink in the traditional way. But he had a shaker at his disposal, and the guy simply mixed coffee and sugar in it, pouring them with ordinary cold water.

In the process, the Greek got carried away with the preparation and added a few more ice cubes to the shaker. He really liked the finished result: the drink was cold and refreshing, invigorating, and at the same time did not seem strong in taste. In addition to these advantages, the whipped coffee was topped with high foam, giving the drink an attractive appearance.

This is how the traditional version of this cocktail appeared, which is prepared from instant coffee. After the popularization of the drink, other recipes appeared using natural ground Arabica and Robusta beans, for example, an exquisite mocha frappe.

On a note! Frappe, made from instant coffee, tastes slightly sour. Natural varieties give the drink noble nutty notes.

Where is frappe made?

Despite the fact that the cocktail was first prepared in Greece, it quickly spread throughout the world. It is especially popular in southern Europe, where the hot climate contributes to the popularity of soft drinks. In Cyprus, for example, frappe is considered a traditional delicacy - the islanders themselves are sure that no one in the world knows how to make this cocktail tastier than they do.

They drink frappe in Portugal, Spain, and Malta, and, of course, they love it in France. Moreover, in each country the cocktail is prepared a little differently, adding fruit or replacing milk with creamy ice cream.

On a note! Sometimes on the menu this cocktail is simply called: Greek coffee.

An integral feature of cocktails in all countries is such an ingredient as crushed - crushed or granulated - ice. In some places they use a special frappe ice maker to get it, in others they use a simple shaker. To make a cocktail at home, you can use an ordinary blender or even just break the ice with a rolling pin.

Coffee frappe - basic recipe

Important! In all proposed recipes, the ingredients are indicated for 1 serving of the drink.

The simplicity of the components in the basic recipe does not prevent the resulting thick foam, rich taste and dense aroma of the drink, which are deservedly appreciated in all corners of Europe.

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 tsp. instant coffee + 100 ml water or a standard cup of chilled espresso;
  • sugar, milk to taste;
  • amount of ice – from 2-3 cubes.

For whipping: shaker (if not available, a blender or mixer will do).

Step-by-step preparation:

  1. Brew espresso, cool, strain the grounds, pour into a shaker. If you are using instant coffee granules, simply pour them in there along with sugar and add water.
  2. Close the container tightly and vigorously shake it for several minutes. The output should be a relatively thick foam with an aromatic coffee smell.
  3. Fill the glass to the top with ice. If you don't like iced coffee, you can limit yourself to a few cubes or remove this component altogether, but then it will no longer be an original frappe.
  4. Pour the foamy cocktail into a glass, add cold milk to taste, thereby making the coffee less strong.
  5. Stir the finished frappe with a straw and taste the resulting drink through it.

  • sugar to taste;
  • 50 ml mineral water;

  • ice cubes (at least 7-8 pieces per serving).

The proportions are conditional, they can be adjusted to your taste.

How to make frappe coffee in Greek:

  1. Pour dry coffee, sugar into a frapper (a special device for preparing this drink; at home it can be replaced with a mixer), add 5 tbsp. l. water. If you wish, you can do without sugar, but then the foam will not be too fluffy and airy.
  2. Beat for at least one minute until very stiff foam is obtained.

Blender cooking technology

As experts note, the thickest, densest foam that retains its structure for a long time is obtained by preparing coffee frappe in a blender.

When using this appliance, the cooking steps will be as follows:

  1. We brew espresso (or doppio, as they do in advanced coffee shops), cool it, and dilute it with milk. Pour the liquid into the blender bowl and blend for a couple of minutes at low speed.
  2. Add ice cubes and beat again for another 1-2 minutes.
  3. The final “touch” is to turn on the device at maximum speed, crushing the ice into crumbs, achieving a stable foam of the drink.

Iced coffee "Frappe" with ice cream

In the most intense heat, we recommend preparing even colder coffee, adding ice cream. The recipe will also appeal to those with a sweet tooth, for whom a regular drink seems overly bitter and tasteless.

Ingredients:

  • double espresso;
  • 100 g each of cold milk and ice cream (or other ice cream);
  • 8-10 ice cubes;
  • grated chocolate to decorate the cocktail.

Step-by-step preparation:

  1. Brew espresso or any other strong coffee (this is an important condition!) , cool, filter.
  2. Beat milk and ice cream until foamy.
  3. Gently mix with coffee.
  4. Fill the glass with ice and pour in the milk-coffee cocktail.
  5. Sprinkle coffee frappe with grated chocolate.

If you leave the espresso hot and pour it into a glass already filled with ice and whipped milk mixture, the drink will taste about the same, but the appearance will be very impressive. Coffee stains will cover the snow-white milky surface with a beautiful pattern.

The cost of the cocktail will depend on its composition, as well as on the prestige of the establishment where it is served:

  • A regular drink will cost on average from 60 to 150 rubles.

  • A drink prepared at home will cost you 10-15 rubles.
  • Homemade frappe with fruit or ice cream - about 30-50 rubles, depending on the price of the ingredients used.

Frappe is one of the most unusual coffee cocktails, because unlike others, it is served with ice and used as a soft drink. It was invented in hot Greece, but is loved in all countries, not just the south. A wide variety of recipes suggests that frappe is a versatile and interesting cocktail. In addition to its attractive appearance and excellent taste, it is also chosen for its low calorie and caffeine content, as well as its relatively low price. And the last highlight of the drink is that it is incredibly easy to prepare at home, so anyone can enjoy it!

Frappe coffee is not yet as popular in the CIS countries as other types, however, the drink prepared according to the classic recipe can already be tried in some coffee shops to appreciate the unusual combination of ingredients.

The peculiarity of coffee is the ice included in it, but not in the usual cubes, but in crushed form.

Frappe appeared as a result of a coincidence. In Thessaloniki, in 1957, at an exhibition of Nestle's instant cocoa-based children's drink, one of the workers decided to treat himself to coffee. He couldn’t find boiling water, so he simply used regular cold water, into which he poured the contents of a stick with powdered coffee granules. This is how the prototype of the modern drink appeared.

Pronounce the name frappe correctly, placing emphasis on the last vowel. This is due to the origin of the word (it came from French and is translated as “mixed” “whipped”), despite the fact that the recipe itself is Greek.

Drink in Italian

Sultry Italians are gourmets, so the use of instant coffee in their recipe is unacceptable; you will need only natural, freshly ground beans! Cappuccino freddo is the name given to frappe in Italy, prepared by mixing espresso and frothed milk. Espresso laccino is the second variation of the drink; there is no milk here, only crushed ice and coffee.

Ingredients:

  • 60 ml espresso;
  • 100 ml milk 3.2% fat;
  • 1 tsp. Sahara;
  • 5-10 ice cubes.

Step-by-step preparation:

  1. We grind the beans and brew coffee in a Turk or coffee machine. We put it in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours, it should be not just slightly cool, but icy.
  2. Strain the drink from the grounds, mix in a whipping glass with sugar. Whip until the black liquid becomes a foamy, light brown thick mass.
  3. Fill a glass of frappe coffee, previously placed in the freezer for 10 minutes (this is done so that it cools well and becomes covered with beautiful frost), with the resulting foam.
  4. Pour in cold milk, doing it gradually so that the foam rises to the top and does not dissolve completely.
  5. Add ice, wait a couple of minutes so that beautiful layers form in the frappe.
  6. We add a straw to the cocktail and taste it.

6.Iced orange coffee

Coffee cocktail with honey

For the winter season, you can prepare iced coffee with honey - the drink will be aromatic, exciting the taste buds. It is better to use flower honey - this way the frappe taste will be especially bright and rich.

Ingredients:

  • 100 ml espresso;
  • 1-2 tsp. honey;
  • 75 ml milk;
  • 20 g grated chocolate;
  • 5-8 ice cubes.

Step-by-step preparation:

  1. Brew coffee, strain, cool. Then, in a mixing container, mix it with milk, honey, and half of the grated chocolate.
  2. Beat for a few minutes until you get a beautiful light shade and a dense, thick foam.
  3. Fill 2/3 of the glass with ice, carefully pour the resulting frappe down the side.
  4. Sprinkle with the remaining chocolate and top off the cocktail with a straw.

Although frappe coffee is a rather young drink, the recipe for its preparation has long been not limited to a couple of options. Some people shake it with doppio, others use cold espresso, and others mix it with milk. And the number of possible additives is absolutely amazing: seasonal fruits, mint, chocolate, caramel, nuts, cream, cinnamon, honey, ice cream. A significant amount of ice always remains an obligatory component! And if you use only ice and coffee as ingredients, the calorie content of the finished drink will be very low.
