Bulgur with milk in a slow cooker

Bulgur appeared in the modern kitchen relatively recently, but has deservedly gained the highest popularity. This dish originates from the Mediterranean, which is why recipes often contain non-standard, but very tasty combinations of ingredients. This cereal is very easy to cook in a pan, steamed, but the easiest way is to cook it in a slow cooker.

Features of the dish

Considering that this product has been known in Mediterranean countries for more than 100 years, there are quite a lot of recipes.

A special feature of bulgur porridge is its exceptional taste, suitable for preparing both salty and sweet dishes. This cereal will go well with dried fruits, nuts, and honey.

At the same time, it rightfully remains one of the best side dishes for meat, vegetables or seafood.

Bulgur grains are made from wheat grains. Wheat grains are processed in boiling water, then dried and crushed. The dish is rich in vitamins and microelements. It has a low calorie content, but promotes satiety for a long time.

Due to its high protein content and slow carbohydrates, bulgur porridge is popular among people who control their body weight and adhere to proper nutrition.

The peculiarity of the dish is that even after heat treatment, the porridge retains almost all the beneficial substances.

Thanks to this, bulgur takes first place among porridges, surpassing even the incredibly healthy buckwheat porridge.

Preparing dishes from this grain is very simple. Many will be interested in the fact that bulgur does not need to be thoroughly washed before cooking. Since during the manufacturing process the product is already processed.

One wash is enough, or you don’t have to use it at all.

Proportions

In order for the porridge to be cooked correctly, to have the right consistency and to truly reveal its exceptional taste, it is necessary to maintain the correct proportions. In this case, the ratio of cereals and water should be 1: 2, where water should be added twice as much as cereals.

By observing exactly this proportion, you can be guaranteed to get the correct result. However, there are recipes where more water should be added. With this ratio, the porridge will be no less tasty, but more liquid, and its crumbling will be minimal.

Thus, if the recipe does not indicate the need to increase the amount of water,
deviations from the classic proportions of 1:2 are not recommended
. By observing these proportions, you can use cereals to prepare a variety of salads. Many chefs recommend not cooking bulgur, but simply steaming it with boiling water and leaving it for 2-3 hours to brew. After this, take a colander and drain the remaining water.

Cooking options

The cooking options for this dish are very varied. Technology does not stand still; today there are many kitchen assistants available. One of them is a multicooker.

This machine greatly simplifies the preparation of dishes, mainly by saving time.

You just need to place the necessary ingredients in its bowl, select the desired mode, and then the multicooker will do everything itself.

Cooking porridge in a saucepan on the stove is a rather difficult method. Since there is a very high risk of burning of the cereal, and in the case of milk porridges they can “escape”. This means that cooking cereal dishes on a kitchen stove should be under constant supervision, stirring the porridge and adjusting the temperature.

The multicooker completely eliminates these problems. Cooked porridge in this device will never burn or run off.

An automatic timer controls the cooking time and turns off immediately after the cooking time has expired.

In addition, dishes prepared in a multicooker can be stored in it for some time, remaining fresh and warm. Bulgur in a slow cooker turns out tasty and crumbly.

The classic recipe for this dish is very simple. Let's take a step-by-step look at how to cook this product in a slow cooker.

First, you should study the modes of this multi-stove model. The fact is that their variety is vast, and the names of the modes may vary. To prepare a dish, you can select one of the modes. These can be options: “Porridge”, “Rice”, “Grains”, “Buckwheat”, the “Stew” mode is also universal.

When the desired mode is found, all that remains is to immerse the necessary ingredients in the bowl. To prepare bulgur as an independent dish, you don’t need anything other than cereal, water and salt.

To prepare crumbly porridge, add cereal to the multicooker bowl. Keeping the proportions 1:2, the next step is to add water. Thus, if one and a half glasses of cereal were taken to prepare porridge, then three glasses of water must be added.

The next step is to add salt to the porridge. The amount of salt is an individual question.

In this case, it is worth noting that the amount of salt for cooking porridge in a slow cooker is no different from the amount that would be added to the pan when cooking on the stove.

Therefore, if the usual amount of salt when preparing porridge is half a teaspoon, then the same amount of salt must be added to the bowl of the device.

The final step is to tightly close the multicooker lid and press the selected mode. You can leave the entire process of preparing porridge without control, go about your business until the timer signal notifies you that the dish is being prepared.
