Only in the last few years has it become more and more fashionable to eat properly, eat not a sandwich on the go, but home-peeled carrots, and this cannot but rejoice. After all, if we go back several hundred years and remember what our distant relatives ate, we will be extremely surprised. Porridge with pumpkin in a slow cooker
Fi, porridge! Hurray, porridge! Where did it come from, this ancient Russian food? What customs are associated with it?
Porridge is a feast. First of all, wedding. The porridge was held at the house of the bride's father. The feast was attended by friends, matchmakers, and thousands. The young were showered with hops. They baked loaves and rolls. According to custom, if the position of the bride's father was lower than that of the groom, he sent messengers for the bride, while he himself sat at home.
Two baptismal porridges were prepared. One was cooked by a midwife. Cool millet or buckwheat. Honey, butter, and eggs were generously added to the porridge. A rooster or chicken was baked in it, depending on the gender of the newborn. The grandmother raised the pot of porridge high so that the child grew tall. And so that the child would get back on his feet as quickly as possible, older children were also given a pot of porridge. They had to eat it outside and put a rooster or chicken in the empty pot. The godfather-godfather broke a pot of porridge on the corner of the table - for a happy life. The shards were thrown into the garden for harvest. The porridge that remained in the hands was a treat for the mother of the newborn and guests.
The second porridge was made with wine, pepper, horseradish, and bitterly salted. My father ate this delight. For what? And so that you know what it’s like to give birth. Porridge was served in a fur hat - for wealth. The father ate the spoon, paid for the porridge, and threw the spoon up. And at this time the guests were shouting - making noise, spilling wine - driving out evil spirits.
And there was also this holiday - woman's porridge. Or Day of Midwives and Women in Childbirth. It was celebrated on the second day of the Nativity of Christ. Not every woman could become a midwife. She must be a respected, handy, faithful wife, with a good character, and, of course, aged.
Midwives were famous throughout the world. They invited them to visit or went to visit themselves. They brought money, pies, pancakes, vodka. It was considered especially useful for pregnant women and young girls to visit midwives. This is not a simple mess!
