Causes and treatment of oxalate kidney stones

Have you been struggling with LIVER PAIN for many years without success?

Head of the Institute of Liver Diseases: “You will be amazed how easy it is to heal your liver just by taking it every day...

About 5 out of 100 people have oxalates in their kidneys. These are the most common stones in the urinary system, and they are also among the most unfavorable, as they provoke bleeding and pyelonephritis. If sand or small oxalate stones are found in the kidneys, a diet is suitable for dissolving them, but large stones require radical treatment. And the illiterate use of diet or conservative therapy in such cases can cause a sharp exacerbation, which will lead to renal colic.

Oxalate stones - what are they?

Oxalates in the kidneys arise from an excess of oxalic acid and calcium cations, and a salt is formed that is soluble in urine - calcium oxalate.

At the initial stage, crystals form in the renal tubules, which, if there are too many of them or slow urine output, settle on the walls of the kidneys. Gradually they layer on top of each other and form dense stones with sharp edges (spikes). These protrusions scratch the lining of the kidney and cause bleeding.

Doctors say that the color of the stone depends on how many times it scratches the mucous membranes. Those that did not cause bleeding are light yellow in color, and as the size increases, the number of scratches also increases, and the stone turns dark brown and sometimes black.

Constant irritation provokes inflammation of the kidney, which is often accompanied by infection. Large stones partially or completely block the outflow of urine from the pelvis, which causes secondary pyelonephritis, accompanied by renal colic. Stones can be up to 4 cm in size and are difficult to dissolve and crush. Removing them involves certain difficulties.

Factors of occurrence

The formation of oxalates in the kidney is associated with nutritional disorders or developmental abnormalities. With an excess consumption of oxalic acid and a lack of potassium, which binds it, the acid flows from the intestines to the kidneys, where it is deposited in the form of oxalates.

Treatment

Therapy is always selected individually depending on the composition of the stones. It necessarily includes a diet, since the main reason for the formation of stones is the excessive intake of oxalic acid from food.

However, therapy should always be prescribed only by a urologist or nephrologist, since uncontrolled and unpredictable movement of stones can completely block the ureter, which poses a threat to the health and sometimes the life of the patient.

The importance of diet

A patient diagnosed with small oxalate stones in the kidney undergoes only conservative treatment with medications, while a patient with large stones is usually recommended to undergo surgery. But in any case, the importance of diet for recovery is difficult to overestimate.

Attention! The diet helps prevent the appearance of new stones, but does not help dissolve existing ones.

For urolithiasis with the formation of oxalates, table No. 6 is recommended. At the same time, there is some difference in the diet for those who remove sand and small stones and those who have already undergone treatment, and the diet is prescribed to prevent the formation of new oxalates.

First about the differences

If a diet is prescribed to remove sand and small oxalate stones, then the patient is supposed to drink a significant amount of fluid. Usually this is plus 2 liters to the norm. At the same time, you need to drink not only clean water, but also juices and teas that do not contain oxalic acid. They will contribute to acidification of urine and faster dissolution of salts.

Attention! The amount of liquid is always agreed with the doctor. In the presence of edema, this method is not used.

Rules for everyone

Rule No. 1 involves removing from the menu products containing oxalic acid:

  1. The following should be completely excluded: liver of all types, tongue, other offal, pork and lamb meat, duck, goose and fatty fish and the first broths from these types of meat. Salted fish, spicy or salty cheeses are prohibited. Among vegetables, you should not eat sorrel, spinach, tomatoes, celery root and greens, onions in any form, dark chocolate, cocoa beans. These products contain more than 1g/kg of oxalic acid.
  2. Use in small doses: ground chicory, carrots in any form, tea, beets (boiled only), green beans (they contain from 0.3 to 1 g of acid).
  3. Eat moderate amounts of fresh white cabbage and Brussels sprouts, apricots and dried apricots, bananas, currants, potatoes (acid content from 0.05 to 0.3 g/kg).

It is forbidden to drink beet, orange, tomato juices, synthetic vitamin C, infusion or decoction of rose hips.

If a stone of significant size is found in the kidney, it is strictly forbidden to eat spicy seasonings (horseradish, onions, vinegar) and foods (onions, garlic mustard), marinades and smoked meats, fish roe, and drink alcoholic beverages. You can only eat 1 egg per day.

Attention! Foods containing large amounts of oxalic acid are also rich in other components important for the body (microelements, antioxidants); they cannot be completely excluded from the diet, but consumption should be reduced to 50 g/day.

Other rules:

  1. The daily diet should contain no more than 60 g of fat, the amount of protein should not exceed 100 g (boiled lean meats), and carbohydrates - up to 300 g.
  2. Food is taken in small, always equal portions 5 times a day. The average daily norm should not exceed 3500 Kcal.
  3. Portions are divided into 3 full meals and 2 snacks. The time intervals between them should be equal.
  4. In the evening you need to eat at least 2 hours before bedtime.
  5. Restrictions on salt and sugar intake must be introduced.
  6. The diet is agreed upon with the attending physician and takes into account all the patient’s existing diseases.

What is allowed?

You can eat fermented milk products with low fat content, gray wheat and rye bread, low-fat sea and river fish. Soups with second broths from chicken, rabbit, beef.

From cereals - rice and buckwheat, pearl barley, oatmeal, vegetables and fruits that do not contain oxalic acid. Drinks include compotes of sweet fruits and dried fruits (apples, pears), juices, mineral waters (slightly alkaline, like Essentuki No. 4). Potatoes are useful; their components bind excess potassium. You can eat pumpkin and sunflower seeds, nuts.

The menu should contain soups, cereals, fresh and boiled vegetables and fruits, and main courses steamed from lean meat. Casseroles, jellies, compotes and juices, and fermented milk products are allowed.

It is especially useful to eat foods that help remove oxalates from the body: pears, plums, grapes, raisins, quinces, prunes.

What's not allowed?

In order not to burden the digestive system, other restrictions are prescribed: it is not recommended to use canned and pickled foods, pork, lamb, poultry (except chicken) and broths made from them, strong black tea, coffee, cocoa, chocolate.

The liver is treated instantly, even HEPATITIS! Complete cleaning! Follow this method. Read more

All greens are prohibited for consumption: parsley, dill, celery, etc., except cilantro.

It is not allowed to eat baked goods, fatty sweet desserts, white bread and baked goods made from premium flour, and ice cream.

How to cook?

If there is a large amount of salts in the urine, it is recommended to steam the dishes; boiling is also allowed.

It is useful to drink diuretic juice (cucumber) half an hour before the main meal.

Fermented milk products are consumed during 1-3 meals.

Attention! Heat treatment of vegetables does not reduce the amount of oxalic acid in them. In this way, beneficial vitamins and microelements are only destroyed.

Oxalic acid is not removed during frying either; there is an additional load here, since this type of cooking is difficult for the intestines to process.

What seasoning goes well with chicken liver?

If you don’t know what to season your dish with and how to improve the taste of chicken liver, then first pay attention to classic and traditional spices - they are always appropriate and do not give the treat any strange or atypical taste.

Bay leaf

Are you going to boil chicken liver in boiling salted water? Then you can’t do without bay leaf - a couple of dried leaves will make the delicacy more aromatic and tasty, and at the same time make sure that the offal gives off less of its specific smell.

Salt and black pepper

Without this set, not a single dish in our kitchen is unthinkable, and chicken liver is no exception. Moreover, experienced culinary specialists and chefs advise adding salt and black pepper in any case - whether you fry liver, bake it or boil it, you can’t do without these spices.

At the same time, coarse salt with pronounced crystals and black pepper, which has just been ground, are better suited for fried and oven-baked liver. But it’s better to throw whole black peppercorns into the pan with the boiled poultry liver.

Before cooking fried liver in sour cream with drizzle

So, before you prepare delicious and soft fried beef liver with basting, you will need to collect the following ingredients:

  • beef liver 1 kg;
  • white onion 200 gr;
  • sour cream 10% 200 ml;
  • milk 3.5% - 500 ml;
  • flour – 4 tbsp. spoons;
  • vegetable oil for frying 3 tbsp. spoons;
  • salt, spices.

The first stage of preparing the dish is soaking the washed, defrosted liver in milk.
To reduce the holding time, you can cut into large pieces. Pour milk over the product and leave for 1 hour. When the liver is soaked, we begin to peel and chop the onion. Then fry the onions, cut into half rings, in a frying pan with the addition of 1 tbsp. spoons of vegetable oil. Fry until golden brown. You can lightly sprinkle with granulated sugar - it turns out to be an excellent color for future gravy.

Then we cut the liver into thin slices, as shown in the photo:

Quickly pour 3 tbsp. spoons of vegetable oil and fry the liver until golden brown:

Place the fried onions on top and mix everything thoroughly, first reducing the heat to minimum. Add salt, black pepper and other spices to taste:

What spices go well with fried chicken liver?

Pan-fried dishes have a great advantage - they can be generously seasoned with almost any spice. You can choose the most optimal ones from the list below, but this does not mean that other types of fragrant herbs and components will be worse. Here everything depends on your personal tastes.

Garlic

You can add a touch of heat and spicy aroma to fried chicken liver with chopped garlic. You can squeeze a few cloves through a press, or you can use ready-made seasoning in the form of granulated garlic.

It will be especially tasty if you fry the chicken liver not in sunflower oil, but in olive oil, and then add a clove of garlic to the finished dish.

Basil

Basil has a less pronounced taste, but it is simply irreplaceable in salads with chicken liver. You can use either fresh basil or a dried version. Moreover, for “summer” salads with fresh vegetables, fresh herbs are more suitable, but for a hearty snack with liver, dried ones are more suitable.

Herbs and spices for boiled chicken liver

Boiled liver can be seasoned with spices with more pronounced flavors, as well as nuts and aromatic herbs. This is due to the fact that the taste of boiled chicken liver is not as distinct as that of fried chicken, and most often it is added to salads and appetizers, where unusual ingredients would be especially appropriate.

Dried onions

If you season your dish with any dairy sauce, be it cream or sour cream, dried onions will be a good option. At the same time, you can add it both to the liver itself and to the sauce.

Walnuts

There are many recipes using chicken liver and walnuts - this is an excellent option for a festive table when you need to please guests with unusual dishes and servings. It is best to make salads using this recipe; they turn out low in calories, but incredibly appetizing.

Almond

Almond nuts can easily replace walnuts, but it costs less to add them - if walnuts, due to their bitter note, are ideally combined with chicken liver, then almonds no longer merge with the product and remain a separate bright spice.

Hot chili pepper

Lovers of everything spicy can easily season the bird's liver with ordinary hot pepper. Moreover, this is also a wonderful option for fried liver.

Additionally, chili works best if you are going to add tomatoes or tomato paste to the recipe.

Nutmeg

Chicken liver in a salad will only be “rejoiced” at this proximity, because the taste will be refined and almost restaurant-like. Of course, you shouldn’t put nutmeg in a regular recipe, but for a holiday table it would be a wonderful and fresh idea.
