Preparing the berries

Today, there are several known methods for producing sea buckthorn oil, and each of them requires careful preparation of the berries, for which it is very important to comply with certain requirements during their collection and processing. Thus, preparing sea buckthorn oil at home is only possible if the berries are collected during the first frost. This ensures the integrity of the fruit and the content of the greatest amount of useful substances.

Before processing, the collected berries should be rinsed well under running water and dried, spread in one layer on a horizontal surface covered with a clean cotton or linen towel.

The simplest recipe for sea buckthorn oil

Rinse fresh berries thoroughly and place them on paper or a towel to dry. Next, squeeze the juice from these fruits. For example, grind them in a mortar and then squeeze them through cheesecloth, or use a juicer.

Then pour the squeezed juice into a clean glass container with a wide neck and place it in a dark place for a day. Oil will collect on the surface of this juice. It is lighter in color than juice and has a characteristic consistency. Carefully collect the oil from the surface with a spoon or you can do this with a pipette, then pour it into a glass bottle. Cover it tightly with a lid and store it in the refrigerator.

This method is not only simple, but also the highest quality. The resulting oil can be used in small quantities to care for facial skin.

How to prepare sea buckthorn oil from cake at home

Try making sea buckthorn oil in a simple way first. Of course, its simplicity is relative. But you will get an idea of ​​the technology for making sea buckthorn oil at home and will be able to decide whether to do it in the future:

  1. Pass selected and pure sea buckthorn berries through a juicer. Separate the juice and use it as you wish (for drinking or cooking).
  2. Transfer the remaining pulp into a non-metallic container (a large glass jar will do) and fill with fresh vegetable oil.
  3. Use unrefined sunflower or extra virgin olive oil at the rate of half a liter of oil for every 3 cups of sea buckthorn cake.
  4. Cover the jar with a lid (no seal needed) and put it in a dark place. Leave at room temperature or slightly cooler for about a week (6-8 days).
  5. After this time, the pulp will have time to transfer microelements and vitamins to the oil. You can strain it from the cake and start using it, or you can further improve the quality of the oil.
  6. Juice again from about the same amount of fresh berries as you did the first time. Dispose of it as desired, and fill the new cake with the already infused sea buckthorn and strained oil.
  7. Repeat the infusion procedure, then squeeze the oil from the cake. Sea buckthorn oil is ready.

COLD METHOD

Simple and reliable, however, the concentration of nutrients here is slightly lower than when prepared by other methods.

Recipe “Elementary, Watson!”

We take the pulp left over after making the juice. We spread it in a thin layer on a baking sheet and dry it in the oven with the door open at a temperature no higher than +50-60o C. At higher temperatures, valuable substances, such as carotenoids, tocopherons and some others, decompose, losing their beneficial properties.

You can dry it not in the oven, but simply in the room, then it will be even easier, but a little longer.

Advice: when drying the berry pomace, stir it periodically, then the process will go faster and the result will be of better quality.

Grind the resulting raw materials in a coffee grinder, or pass through a meat grinder. If the quantity is small, you can simply grind it in a wooden or stone mortar. There is no need to grind it into dust; it is quite enough to grind it until it becomes coarsely ground coffee.

Pour the ground pulp heated to +45-50 o with refined olive oil so that it covers it only by 0.5 cm (do not pour too much oil!). You can pour it cold, but then you need to steep it a little longer. Now you need to cover the jar with a lid and place it in a dark, secluded place, for example, in a kitchen cabinet for at least a week, or better yet, a month.

Tip: to speed up the process, you can use a thermos . Place the sea buckthorn cake in a thermos and fill it with hot oil so that it barely covers the pulp. This method of preparation allows you to reduce the infusion time to 3-5 days.

During this time, the oil will become orange-golden in color, as it should be. This means that everything worked out, it absorbed the substances contained in sea buckthorn that are beneficial to the human body.

Now carefully filter the resulting oil extract and pour it into a suitable tightly closing container, preferably made of dark glass and with a narrow neck.

Pour so that there is practically no air left in the bottle, right up to the cap . All these precautions are necessary in order to preserve all the healing properties of sea buckthorn oil without loss. If, after use, half or less of the drug remains in the bottle, it is better to pour it into a smaller container.

HOT METHOD

This method is a little more complicated, but the result is ultimately more effective.

Recipe 1. “Tired Sun”

  • Fill the prepared sea buckthorn cake with refined vegetable oil, preferably olive oil, as it is universal and suitable for both external and internal use.
  • Place the container in a water or steam bath, or, alternatively, in the oven. Simmer the mixture for 24 hours at a temperature of +40-45 o C.
  • After this, cool, strain and pour into the prepared jar. Close tightly and place in a dark place for a week.
  • After a week, carefully drain so as not to disturb the sediment. Strain and set aside again for a week.
  • We repeat the cleaning and filtering procedure until it brightens and becomes transparent.

If you have a multicooker, you can cook this oil in a multicooker. Pour the ground cake into the multicooker bowl and fill it with oil. We set the “Simmering” (“Warming”) program for at least 4 hours, if desired, you can do it for 8-10 hours. After completing the process, filter and pour into containers, store in a cool, dark place, preferably in tightly closed bottles or bottles with a narrow neck.

Tip: If possible, do not use metal tools and utensils, especially aluminum, when cooking. Sea buckthorn contains many different acids that can react with metal.

Recipe 2. “Triple Strength”

As in the previous recipe, pour in and heat the mixture to +40-45o C. But we warm it up only for 4 hours, and then set it aside for a day. We do this three times. If desired, the cake can be replaced with fresh one each time, this will result in an oil that is more saturated with useful substances. At the end, we again filter several times and seal for storage.

Advice: after opening, it is better to store the oil infusion in small, tightly closed bottles. This way it will be better preserved and more convenient to use.
