It is in vain to believe that the most delicious hot dog in the world is made in America, but by preparing it at home, we will outshine our overseas colleagues. Because ours will turn out better! We will quickly and tasty feed the family with a simple dish using various recipes. Classic fast food, which is traditionally enjoyed right on the street, is made from a bun, putting a sausage in it, pouring various sauces on it. If desired, add fresh or salted vegetables, cheese, bacon. Hence the variety of recipes, from French or Danish to ours, home-grown, invented by the housewives themselves.
They say that the legendary hot dog, which has become a gastronomic symbol of America, was created by a simple German butcher from Frankfurt. Literally translated it means “hot dog.” The butcher himself funny called his work “dachshund”. Having moved to the American continent, he established the production of sausages in a bread casing, thereby glorifying both himself and the country. Gradually, buns began to be used instead of bread, and sausages were used together with sausages. In this form, the hot dog has become incredibly popular throughout the world. Over time, changes have occurred in the classic hot dog recipe. The sausage remained unchanged, but sometimes the bun was replaced with lavash, and this is a completely different taste of the dish.
Hot dog at home - a simple classic recipe
The easiest way to enjoy this famous homemade fast food is to use a classic bun and a regular sausage. You can bake the buns yourself, as described in the recipe below, or purchase ready-made ones. Don't skimp on sausages, buy the best.
You will need:
- Sausage.
- Special bun for hot dog.
- Spicy ketchup - large spoon.
- Sweet mustard - a small spoon.
- Mayonnaise - large spoon.
The ratio of mustard and ketchup can be adjusted based on your preferences.
Step by step recipe:
Cut off the tip of the bun.
Using any method, make a hole inside the crumb to put the sausage in and pour in the sauce. You can, in principle, simply cut the bun, but not all the way. But then the sauce will leak out. Here I suggest pressing the crumb with a large syringe - very quickly and conveniently (press while simultaneously screwing in the syringe).
The result will be a neat hole with smooth edges.
Heat the bun and sausage in a dry frying pan for 2 minutes. After a couple of minutes, take out the bun and fry the sausage for a few more minutes, turning in different directions.
Pour ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard inside.
You can do this one at a time, but it is better to mix first in a separate bowl.
Stick the sausage in, add a little ketchup on top - the hot dog is ready!
Americans are proud of their dish. Every year on July 18, the country celebrates Hot Dog Day. And they even created the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, which checks the quality of fast food and its advertising. But in 1987, the residents of Frankfurt grandly celebrated the 50th anniversary of the fast dish.
Hot dog buns on water
Recipe for simple yeast buns for hot dogs on water. From this amount of products you will get 8-10 pieces of the usual size. If your sausages are large, then make larger buns.
Ingredients
- 260 ml water;
- 6 grams of yeast;
- 500 grams of flour;
- salt and sugar;
- 20 ml oil;
- sesame seeds if desired.
Preparation
- Pour warm water into a bowl, you can take it from a kettle. Put a teaspoon of granulated sugar, add an incomplete teaspoon of salt, about 2/3, stir.
- Add dry yeast. They can be replaced with pressed yeast, but then you need not 6 grams, but 13-15 at least. Dissolve.
- Add half a glass of flour and stir. Leave the warm mash for half an hour, let the yeast start working.
- Now you can add flour, add oil, knead a soft but not sticky yeast dough. Place in a dish with high sides, such as a saucepan, and cover with a breathable towel. We wait until the dough doubles in volume.
- Divide the dough into rolls of equal size. You can do this using scales.
- Roll out each piece into a rectangle, but not too much, just a little, twist the roll to make an even bar. Transfer to a baking sheet.
- Let the hot dog buns rise on the baking sheet for about another half hour.
- Lubricate the products with plain water. You can immediately, before the surface dries, sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Place in the oven to bake.
- Take out the baking sheet with the prepared buns, cover with a towel to soften them. Then cool it some more, cut it, and make homemade hot dogs!
How to cook a hot dog with sausage - the most delicious recipe
There are many ways to prepare fast food from buns with sausages. Meet another popular hot dog option. It is the most harmful, but at the same time the most delicious.
You will need:
- Bun.
- Sausage – 2 pcs.
- Bacon - a couple of strips.
- Bulb.
- Mayonnaise.
- Spicy mustard.
Preparation:
Cut the bacon strips into slices. Chop the onion into half rings. Place together in a frying pan.
Fry over almost full heat until the onion is beautifully browned and soft. Place a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
Fry the sausages in the remaining oil.
Cut the mini baguette in half lengthwise. Open it and make a mayonnaise mesh.
Add the bacon and onion filling, using half the total amount.
Cover them with two sausages, placing them as in the photo so that the ends stick out.
Add a few drops of mustard.
Next, make a layer of bacon and onions. Top the entire structure with ketchup and take a sample from the hot dog. Bon appetit.
How to make a hot dog - recipe in pita bread
A very simple way to quickly enjoy fast food is to prepare a snack in pita bread. You and I have already made a pita bread snack with different fillings (I invite you if you are interested), this time we’ll put a sausage in it and get a full-fledged hot dog.
We take:
- Lavash – 3 thin sheets.
- Sausages – 3 pcs.
- Korean carrots – 90 gr.
- Arugula – ½ bunch.
- Lettuce – 3 leaves.
- Mayonnaise – 2 large spoons.
- Spicy mustard - 3 small spoons.
Preparation:
- Rinse the lettuce leaves and be sure to dry them.
- In a separate bowl, mix mustard with mayonnaise.
- Fry the sausages until lightly browned (in a frying pan without adding oil).
- Spread the layers of lavash on the table and quickly coat them with sauce. Line the surface with lettuce leaves.
- Squeeze out excess marinade from Korean carrots and spread in an even layer over the salad. Scatter arugula leaves on top.
- Place the fried sausage, pour over the remaining mustard-mayonnaise sauce.
- Wrap it in a roll, securing it with toothpicks for security.
French hot dog at home
The French version of the hot dog is much simpler and more sophisticated. Remember about it if you want to prepare a snack quickly and tasty. Especially when the soul demands a holiday and refuses to eat regular food.
Compound:
- Hot dog buns – 2 pcs.
- Sausages – 4 pcs.
- Pickled cucumber (salted cucumber is acceptable) – 1 pc.
- Mayonnaise – 2 tablespoons.
- Mustard – 2 tablespoons.
- Ketchup - the same amount.
Optionally include red onion and tomato in the recipe.
How to do:
- Boil the sausages until cooked, removing the film. Can be fried on the grill or in a frying pan.
- Warm the buns in the microwave (a couple of minutes).
- Chop the pickled cucumber as finely as you can.
- Cut off the end of the bun. Carefully remove the center (you can, as in the first recipe, push it with a syringe).
- Combine the dressings for the sauce in a bowl. Pour some into the base of the loaf.
- Push the sliced cucumbers inside. If you decide to add tomatoes and onions, add them at this stage, after finely chopping them. But then it is better to cut the bun lengthwise.
- Add the sausage, pour the sauce on top and serve while the appetizer is still hot.
Recipes for unusual hot dogs that kids will love
To make the dish healthy, you should choose sausages in a natural casing, which should spring back when pressed, be even, smooth and without wrinkles. In addition, they must be the color of the meat from which they are made: chicken - light, beef - red, lamb - darker. Particular attention should be paid to the smell: if the meat or sausages smell strongly of seasonings, most likely they are stale.
The main thing is the bun
The main secret to the success of any hot dog is a tasty and fluffy bun. They can be baked in a traditional oblong shape or cooked into animal shapes.
Frog bun.
The dough should be given a round shape, and two small balls should be stuck on top, from which the frog's eyes will be made. And into the already assembled hot dog, insert a thin and long piece of pickled cucumber, cut lengthwise, across it - you will get a protruding tongue.

The raw dough should be shaped like a T-shirt, only with more rounded edges. When the bun is ready, it will look like a dog's face with long ears. Her eyes and nose can be made from olives, after sticking them into raw dough.
Hippopotamus bun.
To make a hippopotamus head, the dough should be round with small balls at the bottom of the loaf - nostrils into which you can insert olives. They are also great for the eyes.
The bun can be made in any shape - its complexity depends only on your imagination and culinary abilities. And in addition to the shape, it can be given an unusual color. Even at home it is not difficult. For a red bun you need tomato paste, for a yellow one - turmeric or carrots, for a green one - spinach, for a black one - activated charcoal or cuttlefish ink, for a pink one - beets.

It’s better to use sausages for them too: cut pieces of them from the edges of the same size at an angle of 45 degrees, connect them together in the shape of a heart and secure with a toothpick, onto which pieces of hard cheese are placed in the form of a “tip” and “tail”. You can assemble this hot dog into a red bun, which can also be decorated with hearts made from homemade sauce.
Chicks
We take the sausage and cut it into three parts, make a beak and eyes to make a chick. The bun will play the role of a log in which you can make a nest of colored pasta, adding a delicious sauce to it.
Fruit mix

Many mothers put a fruit mix of seasonal berries and fruits in a beautiful bun. Finely chop them and then mix with yogurt. We do:
- Roll out the dough, cut strips from it according to the number of sausages. The width of the blanks is 1.5 cm. The length is 20 cm.
- Wrap the sausages in a spiral, leaving a small space between the turns. Tape the edges securely.
- Grease a baking sheet with oil and place the pieces. Bake at 180 o C for 15 minutes.
Danish hot dog
The main feature of the Danish recipe is the crispy onions. Due to this, the hot dog acquires a recognizable taste. Otherwise everything is the same as in the classic versions.
Necessary:
- Buns – 4 pcs.
- Sausages - the same amount.
- Onions – 2 large heads.
- Pickled cucumbers, chopped - 4 tablespoons.
- Ketchup, mustard for sauce.
- Sunflower oil.
- Salt, granulated sugar - a pinch.
- Flour - a large spoon.
Preparation:
- Chop the onion into half rings, place in a bowl, sprinkle with salt and sugar, and stir. Use your hands a little to help the rings release the juice faster.
- Then sprinkle with flour and mix well again.
- Heat oil in a frying pan, add onion. Fry over moderate heat until beautifully golden.
- At the same time, cut the buns lengthwise, but not all the way to the end. Place in a dry frying pan and brown on both sides. I advise you to press it with a weight so that it is more convenient to heat it over the entire area, and the crust will crisp up pleasantly.
- Remove the film from the sausages, fry and heat in a frying pan. You don't have to add oil.
- Place sausages and chopped cucumbers into the buns.
- Sprinkle with ketchup mixed with mustard. Sprinkle crispy onions over the entire surface.
Quick hot dog buns
Recipe for the simplest hot dog buns made from quick dough with kefir and soda. For loosening, you can use baking powder from bags.
Ingredients
- kefir of any fat content 300 ml;
- 1 tsp. soda;
- three tablespoons of vegetable oil;
- spoon of sugar;
- flour.
Preparation
- We heat the kefir or keep it warm in advance (for example, near a radiator). The drink should not be cold.
- Add soda to kefir and stir. Now leave the mixture to extinguish for about five minutes. The kefir will increase in volume and bubbles will form.
- Once the reaction has passed, you can add a teaspoon of salt and a tablespoon of granulated sugar. Dissolve.
- Add wheat flour one glass at a time, stirring well each time. After two glasses of flour, pour in a little vegetable oil.
- Add the required amount of flour and stir the dough well. It should turn out soft and smooth, leave for about ten minutes.
- We make buns in the shape of large sausages and place them on a baking sheet. As with yeast dough, leave room for rising.
- Lubricate the top with water, or milk, but they should not be covered with a crust, it will interfere with rising.
- Bake at 190 degrees until done.
Homemade hot dog with cabbage
The original recipe uses Chinese cabbage. But it wouldn’t be a big mistake to replace it with regular fresh, stewed or even sauerkraut.
Compound:
- Hot dog buns – 3 pcs.
- Sausages – 3 pcs.
- Beijing cabbage – 200 gr.
- Korean carrots – 100 gr.
- Mayonnaise, ketchup – 2 large spoons each.
- Mustard, spicy - ½ teaspoon.
- Salt – a pinch.
How to do:
- Finely chop the pekinka, put it in a bowl, and add a little salt. Stir with your hands until the juice appears.
- Drain the marinade from the Korean carrots and chop so that there are no long straws left.
- Separately combine all the seasonings for the sauce.
- Cut the buns on one side, not reaching the end.
- Place them in a dry frying pan, cut side up, lightly fry, or brown in the oven.
- At the same time, boil the sausages, remembering to remove the film.
- Generously coat the inside of the buns with sauce. Fill with Korean-style carrots along the entire length of the workpiece.
- Make a layer of cabbage on top and place the sausage.
- Drizzle generously with sauce and serve.
Classic baking option
Ingredients for 8 buns according to the original recipe:
- flour - 2 tbsp. wheat and half as much as whole grain;
- baker's yeast - 1 tsp;
- milk - 1 tbsp;
- butter - 25 g;
- granulated sugar and salt - 1 tsp each.
Step by step cooking method:
- Heat the milk until warm. Combine it with melted butter.
- Sift the flour. Gradually slowly introduce her to the formula. During the procedure, constantly stir the contents with a spoon.
- Add yeast, salt and granulated sugar there. Start kneading using a hand whisk, food processor, mixer with a special attachment, or any other suitable device.
- Knead the dough thoroughly until it forms a dense, smooth mass.
- Set aside for 20 minutes. at room temperature. Repeat kneading for another 5-6 minutes. Place the dough in a warm place under a lid or towel.
- Wait until it doubles. Now start making buns. Divide the elastic mass into 8 approximately equal pieces. Flatten each to a thickness of 3-4 mm. One piece will weigh about 70 g.
- Wrap each flatbread tightly into a roll. This is a ready-made semi-finished product for the future bun.
- The blanks should also fit. Cover them and put them in a warm place for 30-40 minutes. The volume of uncooked buns should more than double.
- Preheat the oven to 250°C. Cover a sheet with food paper and lay out the products. Sprinkle them heavily with cold water. This technique will allow you to get a golden brown and smooth crust. Before placing the buns in the oven, reduce the heat to 220°C. Bake until golden brown.
Attention! The bun should not stand alone among the ingredients. Its task is to emphasize and enhance the taste of the filling.
Toppings and sauce for hot dog
In addition to traditional toppings and sauces, hot dogs are now made from just about anything. A whole series of recipes in Russian has appeared. The filling includes crab sticks, herring, and potatoes. I offer 4 recipes for bun filling:

The birthplace of fashion and cooking is also no stranger to quick snacks. But the French have their own view on how to cook a hot dog at home. First of all, this concerns the assembly technology: according to the French recipe, the bun is not cut lengthwise. The inner crumb should be removed from it, leaving the crust intact.
The second stage is putting the sausage inside. It may already be coated with Dijon mustard. But you can soak it in advance. The free ends of the sausage are generously sprinkled with chopped cheese, with noble blue mold, such as Gorgonzola or Roquefort. And as a final step, at the last step, you can flavor the French-style hot dog with a seasoning like Provençal herbs.
For lovers of American classics: mustard can be supplemented with ketchup and mayonnaise. But in this case, you can no longer expect French piquancy from the appetizer.
