Mashed potatoes with milk are a dish absolutely inseparable from generally accepted ideas about home cooking. Making delicious mashed potatoes is very easy if you know how. Each housewife has her own tricks and signature tricks in preparing this simple side dish. I have them too. Almost any dish can be either irreparably spoiled or significantly improved with the help of a number of certain actions. Now I’ll be happy to tell you about my mashed potato secrets, but first let’s identify the ingredients.

Classic mashed potatoes

Ingredients to create it:

  • potatoes - 10 pieces;
  • butter – 50 – 100 grams;
  • milk – 1 glass;
  • salt - teaspoon or tablespoon.

How to cook:

To prepare a classic puree, you need to peel the potatoes, put them in a saucepan and pour cold water into it so that it completely covers it. Cover the pan with a lid and bring to a boil. After this, the heat should be reduced and boiled until the potatoes are ready - about half an hour - an hour. For purees this is not essential - the more, the better. However, remember that the more potatoes are cooked, the less nutrients they retain. Make sure that the water is just barely boiling.

When the potatoes are ready (which can be checked by pricking them with a knife - the knife goes into the finished potatoes easily), remove the pan from the heat, drain the water and add salt to the dish. After this, you can add butter, cover the pan with a lid and wait until it melts (this doesn’t take long – 2 – 5 minutes).

After this, you can proceed to the most important part - the direct transformation of potatoes into mashed potatoes. Which pusher to choose? Give preference to the one you like best, because any dish should be filled only with positive emotions from the cook. You can choose a regular wooden one - a great option for lovers of all things natural. If you want, take a special metal one with holes - the best option for novice cooks. You can also use household appliances.

When the potatoes are completely crushed, you can add milk. Remember that it must first be brought to a boil! If the milk is cold, your puree will turn an unpleasant gray color. Add milk gradually, little by little, and mix the mixture well. Focus on your personal preferences - if you decide that the puree has reached the required thickness, do not add any more milk.

If you are not a novice cook and want to prepare a special puree and enjoy new taste sensations, try the recipes below.

Mashed potatoes without milk, recipe with photos

If you don’t have milk in your kitchen or you simply don’t like it, then we offer a recipe in which we replace the milk with a decoction obtained from cooking vegetables.

You will need:

  • Potatoes - 1 kg
  • Oil - 110 g
  • Egg - 2 pieces.
  • Bay leaf - 2 pcs.
  • Salt

Let's start cooking

Peel the potatoes, remove all excess inclusions and cut them into similar sized slices. Place in a thick-bottomed pan and fill it with enough water to cover the vegetables.

We wait until the water boils, add the bay leaf and salt to taste. Reduce the temperature and cook the vegetables until fully cooked.

When the potatoes are cooked, carefully take out the bay leaves and drain the water, but not into the sink, but into a separate bowl; we will need this broth in the future.

We begin to mash the potatoes, when they turn into puree, add the oil and continue to mash until it is mixed. Having received a creamy puree, first beat in one egg and mix everything very quickly, and then the second.

Lastly, add the broth. You don’t need to pour it all out at once; add it little by little until you get the desired thickness of the dish. As the puree and broth cool, it will thicken, so it is better to serve it immediately, garnished with herbs and, if desired, a little pepper.

Drain the water, leaving some of the broth in a separate bowl just in case.

Mash the potatoes quickly and thoroughly to maintain their flavor and temperature. Add sour cream to the resulting puree and mix everything thoroughly again. At this stage, the dish is already ready, but if you don’t like the consistency, you can dilute the puree with broth, adding a little and stirring it.

Secrets of making delicious puree

  • It’s better to use old potatoes for mashed potatoes; young ones won’t make a good dish;
  • the milk used in making puree can be replaced with any other liquid: broth left over from boiling potatoes, sour cream, water or cream (especially tasty!);
  • if you add beaten egg white to the puree, it will become airy, and if you add the whole beaten egg, the puree will resemble a delicate cream in consistency.

Add special ingredients and create your own new flavors of mashed potatoes, because having a special, mild taste, it can be compatible with most products.
